Sweating under the tropical sun is a lifelong inconvenience, especially for those who enjoy taking their tailored garments out on the town.

Every menswear enthusiast living in warmer climates has likely asked the same question: “How do I stay stylish under the summer heat?”

It’s a dilemma familiar to many who love to dress well but are often discouraged by unforgiving weather. Fortunately, there are elegant solutions. The secret lies in three key elements: fabric, construction, and styling.

Recently, I set aside two weeks to live and work with an 80-year-old master tailor in Taipei.

His workshop sits quietly above the noise of the city. Inside, time moves at a different pace. Chalk glides across cloth with calm certainty, shears open and close with measured rhythm, and every movement reflects decades of accumulated knowledge.

The old tailor lives almost like a hermit. For most of his adult life, the world beyond his workbench has been secondary to cloth, needle, iron, and pattern.

Watching him work feels like stepping into an era where patience is assumed, and mastery is measured not only in years, but also in the amount of attention and dedication to achieving quality completion.

Some time in late June last year, a visit to a nearby café for my routine morning coffee led to a chance meeting with Mac Tanakorn (also known widely on social media as Uncle Mac).

As it happens, I had already been a follower of Uncle Mac’s content. His love for vintage and classic style, and certain sense for adventure has always inspired me, especially in the way he shows how different individuals can express themselves through clothing, given that they are truly confident and comfortable in what they wear. What I also appreciate about his content is its genuine, unpretentious spirit.

I walked over to his table, introduced myself, and pitched the idea of dressing him in The Cutting Room’s elegance. Little did I know it would become the beginning of a beautiful collaboration and an enduring friendship.

Recently, my mother and I were honoured to be interviewed and featured in Singapore’s largest Chinese-language newspaper, Lianhe Zaobao (联合早报).

This is my personal reflection on what it means to create the ideal tailoring experience; a continuous, evolving journey of learning and understanding, guided by Art, grounded in Science, and always centred on the Man. For the tailor, the end of every project should be an opportunity for further enlightenment, and gateway for higher goals in the next commission.

On good days, it enhances his composure; on difficult days, it steadies him. “Even when things go badly, I look in the mirror and know that at least I still look good. It gives me control in the midst of chaos. On the worst days, I still make the effort to show up, dress well, and give my best.”

Recently, I had the opportunity to finish a jacket made from a 7.5oz (210g) Escorial fabric I acquired back in 2019. With the growing trend in tailoring bringing awareness on fabric weight and drape, I saw this as a great chance to explore the practicality of an extremely lightweight jacket and to understand its potential drawbacks. To test it out, I wore the jacket on a warm afternoon in the city of Bangkok.

Anyone can pick up a skill, and yet not everyone who picked up a skill will have the discipline to master it. Mastering a skill requires commitment above all else, followed by discipline and perseverance alike.
