Jacket and Suit Fabrics for Warm Weather
Sweating under the tropical sun is a lifelong inconvenience, especially for those who enjoy taking their tailored garments out on the town.
Every menswear enthusiast living in warmer climates has likely asked the same question: “How do I stay stylish under the summer heat?”
It’s a dilemma familiar to many who love to dress well but are often discouraged by unforgiving weather. Fortunately, there are elegant solutions. The secret lies in three key elements: fabric, construction, and styling.
Perfection - The Endless Pursuit of Better
Recently, I set aside two weeks to live and work with an 80-year-old master tailor in Taipei.
His workshop sits quietly above the noise of the city. Inside, time moves at a different pace. Chalk glides across cloth with calm certainty, shears open and close with measured rhythm, and every movement reflects decades of accumulated knowledge.
The old tailor lives almost like a hermit. For most of his adult life, the world beyond his workbench has been secondary to cloth, needle, iron, and pattern.
Watching him work feels like stepping into an era where patience is assumed, and mastery is measured not only in years, but also in the amount of attention and dedication to achieving quality completion.
TCR1982 Meets UNCLE Mac
Some time in late June last year, a visit to a nearby café for my routine morning coffee led to a chance meeting with Mac Tanakorn (also known widely on social media as Uncle Mac).
As it happens, I had already been a follower of Uncle Mac’s content. His love for vintage and classic style, and certain sense for adventure has always inspired me, especially in the way he shows how different individuals can express themselves through clothing, given that they are truly confident and comfortable in what they wear. What I also appreciate about his content is its genuine, unpretentious spirit.
I walked over to his table, introduced myself, and pitched the idea of dressing him in The Cutting Room’s elegance. Little did I know it would become the beginning of a beautiful collaboration and an enduring friendship.
A Special Feature, A Shared Story
Recently, my mother and I were honoured to be interviewed and featured in Singapore’s largest Chinese-language newspaper, Lianhe Zaobao (联合早报).
It was a meaningful opportunity to share our story and our beliefs, and we are deeply grateful for the experience. You may read more about the interview here.
Bespoke Tailoring - A Process of Art, Science and Man.
This is my personal reflection on what it means to create the ideal tailoring experience; a continuous, evolving journey of learning and understanding, guided by Art, grounded in Science, and always centred on the Man. For the tailor, the end of every project should be an opportunity for further enlightenment, and gateway for higher goals in the next commission.
Code, Cloth and Connection: The Elegance of Being Human
The ritual of dressing well acts as an anchor. On good days, it enhances his composure; on difficult days, it steadies him. “Even when things go badly, I look in the mirror and know that at least I still look good. It gives me control in the midst of chaos. On the worst days, I still make the effort to show up, dress well, and give my best.”
How Should A Pair of Trousers Fall?
What separates a regular pair of trousers from a truly exceptional one?
The answer lies in three key areas: comfort, silhouette, and the way the trousers fall.
A Beautiful Milestone
Recently, we had the pleasure of celebrating a meaningful milestone — the launch of The Cutting Room’s atelier in the vibrant city of Bangkok.
Beyond a Tailoring Journey
Over the past four years, what began as a professional interaction has grown into a sincere friendship—built on trust, curiosity, and an ever-deepening appreciation for each other's perspectives. Mr. K, has become one of my most supportive clients and someone I now consider a friend.
Exploring the Escorial - Extreme Lightweight (7.5oz)
Recently, I had the opportunity to finish a jacket made from a 7.5oz (210g) Escorial fabric I acquired back in 2019. With the growing trend in tailoring bringing awareness on fabric weight and drape, I saw this as a great chance to explore the practicality of an extremely lightweight jacket and to understand its potential drawbacks. To test it out, I wore the jacket on a warm afternoon in the city of Bangkok.
Tailoring: a craft worth pursuing?
Anyone can pick up a skill, and yet not everyone who picked up a skill will have the discipline to master it. Mastering a skill requires commitment above all else, followed by discipline and perseverance alike.
Bespoke Jackets: Well Made, Well-Aged.
The true measure of value often reveals itself over time, as the jacket matures along with you. A well-crafted jacket will age gracefully, much like its wearer.
The 6x1 DB Suit: A Modern Classic?
Among its various iterations, the 6x1 double-breasted suit has emerged as a particularly refined choice, offering a distinctive charm that sets it apart from its 6x2 counterpart.
Exploring The Cotton Suit
Before you commit to a cotton suit, know that cotton wears out aesthetically faster than wool. This may work in or against your favour depending on the look and purpose you are trying to achieve.
Pleated Trousers - Forward or reverse?
To understand the relationship between a trousers pleats and the result after wearing, we have to understand the lower torso anatomy.
Bring Out The Browns
Underappreciated yet versatile and timeless. How does brown hold up as a colour in gentlemen’s fashion?
Knowing Your Tailor
Visiting a tailor can be considered a rite of passage for most men at some point in their life, and yet only the delivery of the final creation determines if one has been in the care of a fine tailor.
what makes a suit of great quality?
A suit is an essential item in any wardrobe, and investing in a quality suit is a must for every man who wants to look his best. However, with so many options on the market, it can be difficult to know what to look for when buying a suit.
WHY SUITING UP MATTERS IN THE MODERN SOCIETY
Men's fashion has evolved considerably over the past century. At the turn of the 20th Century, men in suits were a common sight. The suit was the de facto mode of dressing, regardless of one’s occupation or economic status. Come today, most men have opted for comfort over style, and streetwear dominates the majority of men’s wardrobe.
A Simple Guide To Made-to-Measure and Bespoke.
Often mistake for being the same, the difference between a bespoke suit and one that is made-to-measure can considerably conspicuous in the eyes of the erudite. Let us explore the principles behind the tailoring that set one apart from the other.
